World Diabetes Day in Haydom

Haydom Lutheran Hospital through its Diabetes Unit celebrated World Diabetes Day 2017 by two public health events: the Haydom Diabetic Walk on 13.11.2017 and the non-communicable disease (NCD) public screening and health education on 14.11.2017.

The theme of 2017 World Diabetes Day was “Women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future”.

Haydom Diabetic Walk involved hundreds of people including villagers, students and teachers, hospital workers, and diabetic patients led by the Assistant Managing Medical Director, Dr. Paschal Mdoe; the District Medical Officer, Dr. Joseph Fwoma; the Haydom Ward Executive Officer, Mr. Damian Isaay; the Tanzania Diabetes Association (TDA) Representative, Mama Likoko; and other invited guests.

The event was a success and attracted attention from all Haydom residents. It was the first ever public walk in Manyara Region to promote a healthy behavior let alone the importance of exercise in prevention of Diabetes.

The day after the walk, the hospital conducted public screening for NCDs, whereby blood pressure and blood sugar levels were checked among all participants. Health education was provided to all participants. A total of 375 persons were screened. Of all screened subjects, five had high blood sugar and six had high blood pressure. These subjects were referred to the Diabetes and Hypertension clinics for further evaluation.

The Diabetes Unit and Medical Department would like to thank sponsors of this event; Haydom Lutheran Hospital and Tanzania Diabetes Association and all participants.
